On the 8th of September, just before four o’clock in the afternoon, I stood on the top of the Guillaumet. On this day, I would never have thought of the fact that on the same day I would still be somewhere on a summit. On this Patagonian winter’s day, I went up together with Hans and Juan to the Paso Guillaumet, Hans and Juan accompanied me to film my ascend, at least to the pass. At 4 o’clock in the morning we left the Fraile camp in the valley and a short time later it began to snow. First of all it was not so bad, but the snowfall became stronger and soon we found ourselves in a real snow storm – I thought about returning , but I said to myself: „Ok, let’s go to the Paso Guillaumet and then return. ” On the ascent we met Ines and Paolo, who were not really enthusiastic about that much snow.
It took us about 5 hours to the pass, which we almost did not find because the visibility was so bad. Then we stood on the pass , in the truest sense of the word. After a few minutes almost frozen, the wind whistled over the saddle and we searched for shelter behind a few stones. It was still snowing and in my head I was already returning . But my feeling told me to wait a bit, I do not know why, the weather report ( that means Rolo,) said, that the snowfall would stop in the course of the day and it should get nice. So we waited. After an hour we saw that it got a little brighter and the snowfall was getting less. Without thinking, I pulled on my harness, drank a sip of my now ice-cold water, pushed me a power bar and went off. I do not know exactly why I went off, my feeling told me it fits. Hans was filming me as I faded. I said to him, „Look, if it’s not ok, I’ll come back,if it is ok, I also come back, just a little later!” And then I was alone. The snow was really deep, meter by meter I fought myself up the mountain, yes that was really a fight against the snow, it had rather less to do with climbing. The route, which is normally rated with the 5th difficulty, was really hard, if not to say superhard ! But it could also be that I was just stupid. I secured myself in a few places , because I honestly shat in my pants. The cracks and plates were anything but easy, and I really had to put all my skills to go up there. After over 5 hours and in the summit flank partially up to the belly in the snow, I was finally on the summit of Guillaumet. If I think about that moment, I could scream again with joy. The weather was really nice, and when I stood up there the clouds ripped open and the sun laughed in my face. I stood at the highest point of the summit, gave a smile back to the sun and felt like a winner! As a winner against the snowstorm, as a winner against myself. I did not want to go down any more, but I had to …. my two friends were waiting for me and I wanted to tell them how nice it is up there. After a few steps in the deep snow, I turned around , said the summit goodbye and felt like a winner,…… but I knew: …. compared to Him, I am just a little moment !!!
Also warteten wir.
